YOU ARE WELCOME TO BOTANIC GARDEN

In its operations plan, Forest Park of Culture and Leisure in Bydgoszcz in 1974 spared 100-hectare area to build Botanic Garden, which started in 1980.

The garden of Forest Park of Culture and Leisure is a city garden with 60 ha in area and admittance to it is free. It is open all year round from 9.00 till dusk. Present number of plants: 820 including 460 species growing wild.

Drawn up in 1977 by professor Edward Bartman Garden’s land development plan defined general objectives of constructing it and its priorities.

The proposed so called “settlement concept” mainly assumes keeping, shaping and displaying groups and species of Polish plants. Next  to them, there are foreign plant formations, numerous generic collections and theme displays.

Main sections of the garden are:

  1. Polish plant communities
  2. Arboretum
  3. Coniferous plants
  4. Rockery
  5. Generic collections
  6. Theme displays
  7. Agro-botanic garden
  8. Botanic path for the blind and visually impaired people

  1. Polish plant communities is the most important and the biggest section of the Garden. It has 20 ha in area. Plant species are presented here in groups and formations they naturally exist in. Among numerous collections present in the Garden special attention deserve forest groups of European hornbeam oak forests , Beeches, fens, Sycomore Maples, water plants, rush, meadows and grassy fields.
  2. Detailed plan of arboretum prepared by professor Stanis?aw Balcerkiewicz  and Maciej Korczy?ski, PhD, in 2001 intends presenting dendroflora  of  selected  world’s formations. There are going to  be forests of North America, euksy?skie forests, Big leaf woods, tundra flora, desert trees and shrubs and Sclerophyllous plants. Numerous collections and theme displays of Beeches, Maples, Roses, Heathers, protected plant species, evergreens and spring garden will serve  as arboretum’s complement.
  3. The earliest arranged collection of trees and shrubs is the garden of Coniferous plants. According to the landscape architect Adam Pietrzak, it is arranged in the shape of an amphitheatre composition with strips of shrub species, from  lower to higher ones and then tall trees collections. You can spot here numerous species of Firs, Spruces, Savin Juniper, Cypress as well as Douglas Fir,  Microbiota and Maidenhair Tree. Continuation of the Coniferous Garden is a collection of Arborvitaes.
  4. The most spectacular construction of the Garden is rockery. With its relative height up to 20 m and interesting shape of the place enables forming characteristic for mountains lay of the land: ridges, screes, taluses, gorges. In the very center of the place there is a mountain lake with a stream and a waterfall. The rockery’s foundation is strictly connected with in-built  settlements and rock material used for their construction. In the granite part dominate Dwarf Mountain Pine and Arrola Pine. Among calcareous rocks you can see Edelweiss, Dryas Octopetala, Alpine Pink and many more.
  5. Rich in species, kinds of trees and shrubs are arranged in generic collections. There are, among others: collections of Pines, Azaleas, Lilacs, garden of the cherry and apple blossom, Magnolias, Spireas and Cornelian Cherries.
  6. Theme displays arranged in our garden concern different fields of interests, many of them are of educational character. The most interesting are as follows: butterfly garden, biblical plants, the division of a mountain forest into layers, cross-breed plants- parents and children, gender of plants.
  7. In the closed  part of Botanic Garden there is a small section of cultivated plants. You can find here a collection of new kinds of fruit trees as well as old ones. A group of old type apple trees comes from a village Chrystkowo and was brought thanks to the Vistula River Landscape Park. In this part of the Garden you can get to know functional plants: corn, e.g. Buckwheat, Millet, emmer, plants grown for industrial purposes, root crops, Papilionaceous plants. A collection of healing plants is being organized in cooperation with Medical Academy.
  8. Taxonomy of plant world  is presented along botanic path for the blind and visually impaired people. At a 300-metre railing we can find 230 plant species, some of them are got higher in plant pots and some grow directly in the ground. All plants are labeled with Braille.
